A 3 Days Visit to Evian-Les-Bains , France

Evian-les-Bains, The town of Evian is located on the south shore of Lake Geneva, backed by the foothills of the pre-Chablais Alps, north of the department of Haute-Savoie. Neighboring Switzerland is 13 km from the lake and 45 km from Geneva. We took our flight from Doha to Geneva with Qatar Airways (7 hrs) and from the Geneva Airport, it almost took an hour to reach Evian town.

Our hotel was Evian Ermitage Resort, a 4 star category of the Evian Resort Property. The location of the resort is just perfect with the mesmerizing view of Lake Geneva and the Alps. The architecture of the resort has the old charm with all the modern touches. The environment surrounding the resort creates a feeling of closeness to the nature with lush greenary surrounded by the lake and alps. Just to mention that there are no shops or malls near by this area, it is completely in a secluded and preserved place.

We were staying in a Lake view room and trust me, you just do not get enough of the view from your balcony. I spend most of my time sitting over there looking over perfect piece of scenery in a cold weather sipping a cup of piping hot tea. It is just perfect.

The resort area is quite huge and you can do a lot of walking through out the resort. As I mentioned, ours were a 4 star category resort and in the same compound, you could also find their 5 star Evian Royal Hotel with Golf Club just near the lake.

Being with a three year old daughter who is very naughty, we usually stick to our plan of spending more time in the resort with her than having a expedition through the city life so that we both as parents and our kid can enjoy the time rather than getting annoyed with my daughter’s tantrums. However, the resort had a solution for that as well with a separate Evian kids Resort which really really helped us a lot though out our stay. You can drop in you kid and enjoy a great time of your own with your partner and we made use of it very well. The kids resort has kids friendly staff, lots of toys and activities and they do take your kids for lunch and dinner if you wish to. Doesn’t that sound pretty exciting!!

So the first day, we decided to try the famous spa at the Quatre Terres Spa. To make it convenient for the guests, the resort has an exclusive lift servicing from their floor directly to the Spa which is great. The ambiance was really soothing with the interior having an earthy tone all over. Our Spa was for 45 mins with a scrub massage and oil massage all over the body and I guess I almost slept in between – Relaxed. You have an indoor pool, Jacuzzi, hammam also available at the same area.

Second Day, we left our kid at the kids resort and went for Hot Air Balloon Ride at Bern – Switzerland. It took a ride of one hour from this part of France to Bern. The journey was full of beautiful scenery which you never want to take your eyes off. At Bern, we helped the Pilot from offloading to blowing up the balloon for our ride – a very hard working task, yet exciting !! and here you go, we took off over 4000m above the sealine. I would consider this moment as one of the best in my life. Floating in the sky, over the snowy alps , you will never get enough of it. Must Do while you are in there.

After another one hour ride back to the resort, we went to pick my daughter from the kid’s resort and surprisingly she did not even look at us and went to play with her new friends again!!

On the third day, We were taken to visit and learn about the source, history and process of Evian Water. The first stop was over the mountains – a preserved area where the rain water gets infiltrate subsoil and with a steady and slow movement of 15 years, the water descends through moraines and finally water passes through glacier sands and emerges in the springs and that was our second stop. The place is called ‘the Cachat Spring’ , formerly known as the Saint Catherine Fountain, is the most famous of the many natural sources in Evian. Built in 1903, at the same time as the pump room opposite, the spring runs all year at a constant temperature of 11.6C.

Followed by a visit to the huge Evian Mineral Water Factory where we walked through different stages of collecting, bottling and packaging of Evian water. Indeed a knowledgeable visit.

That makes an end to our mini three days trip to the city of Evian and later in the night we took our flight back to Doha. Like every time, I just do not want my holidays to get over and I am sad. My wait starts for the next trip, In Sha Allah !!

  1. Hot air balloon ride scares the crap out of me (I’m afraid of heights) but I think I’d risk my life for it if the view is as breathtaking as that one! Too bad your kid missed it but I guess she had a fun time too at the Kid’s Resort? 🙂 Did you find out why Evian water is too expensive? :p
